Heroes of Newerth

In December 2012 the popular multiplayer online battle arena game Heroes of Newerth suffered a significant security breach. An attacker managed to gain unauthorized access to the user database through a vulnerability in the games website. The intrusion resulted in the compromise of millions of player accounts. While the passwords were stored as salted hashes at the time the incident highlighted vulnerabilities in gaming infrastructure during that era. The breach caused temporary disruption to services while the developers at S2 Games implemented security patches and forced password resets for the entire player base to mitigate further unauthorized access.
