About this leak
In March 2015 the popular anime and manga community HongFire suffered a significant data breach. An unauthorized third party successfully compromised the forum database resulting in the exposure of approximately 1 million user accounts. The leaked information included sensitive credentials and personal identifiers such as email addresses, IP addresses, usernames, and dates of birth. Furthermore the database contained MD5 hashed passwords with salts which are considered cryptographically weak by modern standards and susceptible to cracking. The incident highlighted vulnerabilities in forum software and the risks associated with storing large amounts of user data in enthusiast communities.
