In late March 2021 the Russian online retailer Icigarette.ru suffered a significant data breach resulting in the exposure of its customer database. The incident involved the unauthorized access and subsequent publication of personal information belonging to approximately 130000 users. Technical analysis revealed that the leaked data included sensitive details such as email addresses and phone numbers. Additionally the breach exposed user names and dates of birth. A major security concern identified in this leak was the presence of passwords stored as MD5 hashes without salt making them highly vulnerable to cracking through rainbow tables or brute force attacks.
