IMesh

The iMesh file sharing service suffered a massive security breach in September 2013 which resulted in the exposure of approximately 50 million user records. The compromised data surfaced for sale on dark web marketplaces in 2016. The breach included sensitive user information such as email addresses and passwords stored as MD5 hashes with salts along with technical data like IP addresses. This incident highlights the long term risks associated with legacy data from peer to peer file sharing platforms and the eventual monetization of old breaches by cybercriminals years after the initial compromise.
