Kaixin001

In October 2011 the Chinese social networking service Kaixin001 experienced a significant security incident affecting approximately 8.2 million users. The leaked dataset contained sensitive information including email addresses usernames and passwords stored in plain text. Although the data appeared in public forums the company suggested that the breach resulted from credential stuffing or brute force attacks targeting user accounts rather than a direct compromise of their central database infrastructure. This incident highlighted the risks of using unhashed passwords and the vulnerability of social media platforms to automated account takeover attempts during that era.
