A data breach involving the Kaspersky fan club forum occurred in early 2024 when unauthorized actors gained access to the community database. The incident resulted in the exposure of sensitive information for over 56 thousand registered users. The leaked data includes unique identifiers such as usernames and email addresses along with technical details like IP addresses. Security researchers noted that user passwords were included in the leak but were protected using the MD5 hashing algorithm which is considered weak by modern standards and susceptible to cracking. The breach highlights risks associated with community managed forums even when affiliated with security brands.
