In mid 2020 a significant data breach involving the Kiwitaxi international transfer service was identified. The incident resulted in the exposure of an internal database containing information about hundreds of thousands of customers. The leaked data included sensitive personal details and security credentials. Analysis indicated that the breach likely originated from an unsecured server or a direct intrusion into the customer management system. The compromised security credentials were stored using SHA1 and SHA256 hashing algorithms with salt which provided some level of protection but remained vulnerable to advanced cracking techniques. This leak posed a significant risk for identity theft and unauthorized account access for users of the transportation service.
