In June 2019 the Knoppix net community forum dedicated to the Linux based operating system suffered a significant security breach. An unauthorized party gained access to the forum database resulting in the exposure of sensitive user information. The incident affected approximately 30000 registered members. The compromised data included user nicknames email addresses and IP addresses as well as passwords stored as MD5 hashes with salt. This breach highlights the vulnerability of legacy forum software to SQL injection or similar exploitation techniques commonly used to target niche tech communities.
