In early 2019 the Russian online fashion retailer Kupivip experienced a significant data security incident. An unprotected database was discovered containing the personal information of approximately 4.2 million customers. The exposed data included sensitive user details such as full names, email addresses, geographic locations, and in many instances personal mobile phone numbers. The breach likely occurred due to a misconfigured server or database exposure that allowed unauthorized access to the customer repository. This incident highlighted vulnerabilities in the storage and protection of consumer data within the e-commerce sector in Russia.
