In early 2021 LinkedIn experienced a massive data scraping incident where attackers extracted information from approximately 500 million user profiles. The data was subsequently posted for sale on a popular hacker forum. While the company stated that this was not a direct breach of its systems but rather a collection of publicly available data combined with information from other websites the scale of the incident raised significant privacy concerns. The dataset included professional details and contact information allowing malicious actors to perform targeted phishing attacks and social engineering campaigns against the affected individuals.
