In February 2016 the Linux Mint project suffered a significant security breach when its website was compromised and official ISO images were replaced with versions containing a backdoor. Additionally the attackers gained access to the sites phpBB forum database which was later offered for sale on darknet markets. The breach resulted in the exposure of user accounts including personal details and credentials. This incident highlighted vulnerabilities in open source distribution infrastructure and forum software security management.
