In January 2015 the popular Russian dating service LovePlanet suffered a major security breach resulting in the exposure of millions of user accounts. The incident was attributed to the hacker group known as GnosticPlayers who managed to gain unauthorized access to the platform backend systems. The leaked data contained sensitive personal information including full names and email addresses. Most critically the passwords were found to be stored in plain text without any cryptographic hashing or encryption which significantly increased the risk of account takeovers across other platforms where users might have reused the same credentials.
