In January 2023 Mailchimp suffered a significant security incident after attackers gained access to internal administrative tools. The breach occurred via a sophisticated social engineering attack targeting employees. This allowed the threat actors to access the account data of 133 customers including the digital media giant TechCrunch. The unauthorized access enabled the export of contact information and internal system data. This was the second time in less than a year that the email marketing platform faced such a compromise involving its internal support systems.
