In January 2023 the hacker group known as NLB claimed a successful breach of the Russian email service Mail.ru. While the attackers initially alleged they had obtained billions of records they ultimately leaked a database containing approximately 3.5 million lines of user information. The incident involved the unauthorized extraction of data from internal systems. Company representatives confirmed the authenticity of the specific leaked dataset but denied that a larger volume of data was compromised beyond what was publicly released by the threat actors.
