In January 2018 the American dating website MatchUSA experienced a significant data breach resulting in the exposure of its user database. The incident led to the unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information for approximately 208 thousand individuals. The primary security failure was the storage of user credentials in plain text format which allowed attackers to obtain login details without needing to decrypt or crack any hashes. This breach highlights critical vulnerabilities in legacy dating platform security practices and poses a high risk of credential stuffing attacks on other platforms.
