Mathway

In January 2020 the educational platform Mathway suffered a massive data breach affecting millions of users. The incident involved an unauthorized party gaining access to the backend database which was later sold on the Darknet. The compromised data included user names and email addresses along with password hashes using the salted SHA-256 algorithm. Additionally many records contained social media identifiers for users who logged in via Google or Facebook. This breach represents one of the largest security incidents in the online education sector during that period.
