In October 2013 the website Mecho Download suffered a significant data breach that resulted in the exposure of approximately 438000 user accounts. The incident involved the compromise of a database containing sensitive user credentials. The investigation revealed that the leaked data included usernames and email addresses along with IP addresses. Furthermore the passwords were found to be stored as MD5 hashes with salt which are considered weak by modern security standards and susceptible to cracking. The website has since become inactive following the incident.
