In late 2021 the European retail giant MediaMarkt suffered a major ransomware attack orchestrated by the Hive group. The incident affected numerous servers and internal systems across several countries including Spain. The attackers initially demanded a massive ransom of 240 million dollars in Bitcoin later reduced during negotiations. The breach disrupted store operations and point of sale systems preventing the processing of returns and certain digital services. Leaked data included internal technical information and potentially employee or customer records stored on the compromised servers.
