In June 2022 the Indian social media platform MemeChat suffered a significant data exposure involving approximately 7.4 million users. The incident occurred due to a misconfigured Elasticsearch server that was left accessible to the public internet without password protection. While the company claimed the exposed data was limited to non-sensitive identifiers the breach highlighted recurring security vulnerabilities within their cloud infrastructure. This exposure allowed unauthorized third parties to view and potentially scrape user records directly from the database.
