About this leak
In July 2019 MGM Resorts a major hospitality and casino operator experienced a significant data breach involving a cloud server. The incident resulted in the unauthorized access of personal information belonging to millions of guests who had previously stayed at the hotels. Investigation revealed that the data was posted on a hacking forum. The exposed records contained sensitive personal identifiers but did not include financial information or passwords. While initial reports suggested a smaller scale later analysis confirmed that the records of over 10.6 million guests were initially leaked followed by a much larger set of approximately 142 million records being offered for sale on the dark web. The breach originated from an unauthorized access to a cloud based data storage service used by the company.
