A significant data exposure incident involving Microsoft employee records was identified in late 2020. The breach originated from a misconfigured Azure cloud storage bucket that was left accessible to the public internet without password protection. The exposed data contained sensitive corporate information including internal technical logs, credentials for various internal systems, and employee profile data. Security researchers discovered the open server which belonged to Microsoft Azure team. The incident highlighted risks associated with cloud misconfigurations even for major technology companies. Microsoft secured the data immediately after being notified of the exposure.
