About this leak
In 2013 the Pakistani mobile network operator Mobilink now known as Jazz experienced a massive data breach involving approximately 44 million customer records. The incident exposed sensitive personal information belonging to a significant portion of the population. The leaked data included full names and residential addresses along with technical identifiers such as mobile phone serial numbers and IMEI codes. Crucially the breach also included Pakistani Computerized National Identity Card CNIC numbers which are unique government identifiers. The scale of this incident made it one of the largest telecommunications data exposures in the region at the time. The breach highlighted significant vulnerabilities in the data management and security protocols of major telecom providers in Pakistan.
