In April 2021 a significant data exposure involving the Russian social networking service My.mail.ru was identified. The incident involved the distribution of a database containing approximately 1.6 million records. The data was primarily obtained through automated web scraping techniques rather than a direct server breach. The exposed information included user email addresses, full names, dates of birth, and geographic residence regions. Shortly after the initial leak a second set of data containing 1 million lines with additional columns surfaced on various underground forums further expanding the scale of the exposure.
