The MySpace data breach is one of the most significant historical incidents in social media history. Although the breach occurred around 2008, the data did not surface publicly until May 2016 when it was listed for sale on the Real Deal darknet market. The leak exposed approximately 360 million user accounts. Compromised information included email addresses, usernames, and SHA1 password hashes. The passwords were converted to lowercase and stored without salt, making them highly vulnerable to cracking by malicious actors. The incident highlights long term risks associated with legacy data and poor hashing practices.
