In May 2016 the virtual pet website Neopets suffered a massive data breach that exposed the personal information of millions of users. The incident involved the unauthorized access and subsequent distribution of a database containing sensitive user details. The data was notably stored in an insecure manner specifically passwords were kept in plain text format making them immediately accessible to anyone who obtained the file. The breach included a wide range of demographic information and technical identifiers used by the platform during that period.
