In December 2015 the popular modding community Nexus Mods confirmed a significant security breach. Although the announcement was made in late 2015 investigations revealed that the actual compromise likely occurred in July 2013 or even earlier. The hack resulted in the exposure of sensitive user database information including account credentials. The breach was attributed to unauthorized access to the sites database servers allowing attackers to extract user records. The incident highlighted vulnerabilities in older cryptographic hashing methods used at the time and forced a site wide password reset for all affected members to secure their accounts.
