In September 2020 a significant data exposure occurred involving the NumBuster caller identification application. The incident involved the systematic extraction of data through parsing techniques rather than a direct server breach. The dataset consists of information linked to approximately five hundred thousand users and their contacts. The exposed records primarily include mobile phone numbers paired with the specific names assigned to them within the contact lists of application users. This type of exposure often results from insecure API endpoints or insufficient rate limiting allowing automated scripts to harvest large volumes of user generated content and contact details.
