In September 2022 the Russian online retailer OnlineTrade suffered a significant data breach affecting approximately 3.7 million customers. The security incident resulted in the exposure of sensitive user information including full names and contact details. Investigations revealed that the leaked database contained passwords stored as MD5 hashes which are considered cryptographically weak and susceptible to cracking. The data appeared on various underground forums and was confirmed by multiple cybersecurity sources monitoring Russian digital infrastructure and e-commerce platforms.
