In August 2013 the gaming forum OwnedCore formerly known as World of Warcraft Excess suffered a significant data breach. An unauthorized party gained access to the forum database resulting in the exposure of over 880 thousand user accounts. The compromised data included sensitive information such as email addresses, IP addresses, usernames, and salted MD5 passwords. The salt implementation was considered weak by security standards making the passwords vulnerable to cracking through brute force methods. This breach was a major security incident for the World of Warcraft community as the platform served as a central hub for game modifications and trading.
