In January 2017 the online dating service Passions Network suffered a significant data breach affecting approximately 833000 registered users. The compromised information originated from a network of niche dating sites under the Passions umbrella. The exposed database contained sensitive user credentials including account usernames and email addresses. Most critically the breach included passwords stored as MD5 hashes which are considered cryptographically weak and susceptible to cracking by malicious actors. The incident highlighted vulnerabilities in legacy hashing methods used by older dating platforms during that period.
