In October 2019 security researchers discovered an unsecured Elasticsearch server containing approximately 4 terabytes of data. The database included 1.2 billion unique records sourced from data enrichment companies People Data Labs and OxyLeads. The exposed information consisted of profiles for hundreds of millions of individuals including social media links and professional history. Investigation revealed the server was not owned by PDL itself but by a customer using their data enrichment services. The massive scale made it one of the largest single server exposures of its time specifically targeting professional and personal identifiers across global populations.
