In July 2015 the discussion forum of Plex a popular media server platform suffered a significant security breach. An attacker gained unauthorized access to the forum server which resulted in the exposure of sensitive data belonging to over 320,000 users. The incident occurred after a hacker managed to compromise a server through a vulnerability in the forum software. The leaked database included account details such as forum usernames and email addresses as well as hashed passwords. Although the passwords were encrypted using salted MD5 many were considered vulnerable to cracking due to the age of the hashing algorithm.
