In September 2016 the PlayStation Universe news and forum website suffered a significant data breach affecting over 226 thousand registered members. The incident involved an unauthorized access to the vBulletin forum database allowing attackers to extract sensitive user information. The compromised data included usernames along with email addresses and dates of birth. Furthermore the leak contained IP addresses and passwords hashed using the vBulletin salted MD5 algorithm which is considered weak by modern security standards. The breach highlighted vulnerabilities in legacy forum software and exposed gamers to potential credential stuffing attacks across other platforms.
