In February 2015 the Sony PlayStation enthusiast community forum known as PSX-SCENE suffered a significant data breach. The incident involved the unauthorized access and disclosure of over 340000 user accounts. The forum was running the vBulletin software which stored user credentials including IP addresses and passwords as salted hashes. Due to a weak hashing implementation prevalent in older vBulletin versions many of these passwords were susceptible to rapid decryption through brute force or rainbow table attacks. The breach exposed sensitive member information to the broader public and malicious actors.
