About this leak
In late 2016 a massive data breach involving the Russian internet portal Rambler was exposed. The incident originated from a hack that occurred in February 2014 but the data was only widely circulated years later. The breach compromised approximately 100 million user accounts. The most significant security failure was that Rambler stored user passwords in plaintext format making them immediately accessible to attackers without decryption. The leaked database contained usernames and passwords associated with the Rambler.ru email service and other integrated platform features.
