In May 2019 the popular Chinese online literature platform Read Novel suffered a significant data breach. An unauthorized party gained access to the database leading to the exposure of millions of user records. The compromised data included sensitive information such as usernames and mobile phone numbers along with email addresses and passwords stored as salted MD5 hashes. This incident impacted over twenty two million unique users who interacted with the web service for digital reading.
