In December 2011 the Chinese social network Renren suffered a significant data breach. The incident involved the exposure of sensitive user credentials including email addresses and passwords. A major security concern was that this data was stored in plaintext without encryption. The breach affected approximately 4.7 million users highlighting vulnerabilities in early social media security practices in China. The data was widely circulated on underground forums and Chinese developer communities shortly after the discovery.
