In September 2024 a significant data breach occurred at Retemex a Mexican virtual mobile operator known for its 4.5G LTE services. The incident resulted in the unauthorized exposure of personal information belonging to approximately 25000 customers. The leaked dataset included highly sensitive information such as full names email addresses and mobile phone numbers. Most critically the database contained account passwords stored in plain text along with detailed physical addresses and current account status information. The breach highlights significant security failures regarding data encryption and protection of subscriber credentials within the telecommunications sector in Mexico.
