In June 2016 the Runescape private server community known as Runique experienced a significant security breach. An unauthorized party gained access to the forum database compromising data for nearly 190 thousand registered members. The incident exposed sensitive information because the platform failed to implement strong cryptographic hashing for user credentials. The breach affected players looking for custom gaming experiences outside the official Jagex servers and highlighted security vulnerabilities in community managed gaming projects.
