Rusrek is a major information portal and classifieds platform serving the Russian-speaking community in the United States. In early 2021 the website suffered a cyberattack resulting in the unauthorized access and subsequent publication of its user database. The breach exposed approximately 160000 records. Technical analysis revealed that the stolen data included personal identifiers and security credentials. Specifically the leak contained full names email addresses and IP addresses. User passwords were also compromised although they were stored as MD5 hashes with salt providing some level of cryptographic protection yet remaining vulnerable to modern cracking techniques.
