In July 2016 the digital marketing and search engine optimization community SeoChat suffered a significant data breach. The incident resulted in the exposure of approximately 300 thousand user records from its database. The compromise occurred due to vulnerabilities that allowed unauthorized access to sensitive user information. Data points included member usernames and email addresses along with IP addresses. Furthermore the leak contained passwords stored as MD5 hashes which are considered cryptographically weak and susceptible to cracking via brute force or rainbow table attacks. This breach highlighted security risks for online forums and specialized professional communities during that era.
