In December 2019 the online gaming forum known as SoarGames experienced a significant data breach that compromised the personal information of approximately 5 million registered users. The incident involved the exposure of sensitive database records including user email addresses and account usernames. Furthermore the breach included registration IP addresses and passwords that were stored using the insecure MD5 hashing algorithm. This method of password storage is highly vulnerable to cracking attempts allowing malicious actors to potentially gain unauthorized access to user accounts. The leak appeared on various underground forums and data marketplaces shortly after the incident took place.
