In November 2014 the gaming forum Sythe.org suffered a significant security breach that resulted in the exposure of approximately 260000 user records. The incident occurred due to a vulnerability that allowed unauthorized access to the forum database. The leaked information included registered nicknames, email addresses, and IP addresses. Additionally, user passwords were compromised in the form of MD5 hashes with salt, which are considered cryptographically weak and susceptible to cracking. Sythe is a well known marketplace for virtual goods and services related to online games like RuneScape, making its user base a target for credential stuffing and account takeovers.
