In 2012 the Chinese ecommerce giant Taobao experienced a significant data security incident involving the exposure of approximately 21 million user accounts. The breach involved the compromise of login credentials where email addresses and passwords were leaked in plain text format. This incident raised major concerns regarding the security of one of the worlds largest online marketplaces and highlighted vulnerabilities in credential storage practices during that period.
