Taringa

In September 2017 the large Latin American social networking site Taringa suffered a major security breach. Attackers managed to access the database containing information for approximately 28 million accounts. The incident was significant due to the exposure of user credentials secured with the outdated MD5 hashing algorithm which made them highly vulnerable to cracking. The leak included a wide range of personal details and underscored the risks associated with weak cryptographic practices on high traffic platforms.
