In September 2016 the online browser based role playing game TheCrims suffered a significant data breach. An unauthorized third party managed to infiltrate the game database resulting in the exposure of approximately 160000 player records. The compromised information included highly sensitive data such as email addresses and user IP addresses. Furthermore passwords were leaked in MD5 hashed format with salt which poses a significant risk as they can be decrypted through brute force or rainbow table attacks by malicious actors.
