In July 2022 the Trackitt immigration status tracking platform suffered a data breach affecting approximately 421000 users. The incident was caused by an exposed directory that was intended for hosting database backups. This security misconfiguration allowed unauthorized access to sensitive user information including names and credentials. The data was discovered by security researchers and later distributed within the darknet community. The exposed passwords were stored using the SHA1 hashing algorithm which is considered cryptographically weak and susceptible to cracking by modern standards.
