In May 2022 the Japanese food delivery service Varvar-Sushi experienced a data breach that exposed sensitive customer information. The incident resulted in the public disclosure of a database containing personal details of over 10000 users. Technical analysis indicates that the leak included email addresses names and phone numbers along with user passwords stored using the MD5 hashing algorithm which is considered cryptographically weak and susceptible to cracking. The data appeared on various underground forums and public repositories making the affected customers vulnerable to phishing and account takeover attacks.
