In October 2021 the Russian internet service provider Velnet suffered a significant data breach exposing the personal information of approximately 10000 customers. The incident involved the unauthorized access and extraction of a database containing sensitive user details including names and residential addresses. The leak also exposed technical data such as connected service tariffs and multiple contact phone numbers per individual. Most concerning was the inclusion of user passwords which were largely automatically generated by the system at the time of account creation. This exposure puts affected subscribers at risk of credential stuffing and unauthorized access to their telecommunication accounts.
