Venmo

In June 2019 a security researcher scraped approximately 7 million transaction records from Venmo due to an open API. This incident highlighted the default public nature of Venmo transactions which included personal details and payment descriptions. The researcher demonstrated that massive amounts of data could be harvested without authentication exposing user behavior and social connections. This was the second major scraping incident in a year for the platform following similar findings in 2018.
